Remarks on Unrelated Recent Cinema

The Last King of Scotland Having not seen any other best actor contenders but Will Smith in The Pursuit of Happyness, I would venture that Forest Whitaker’s win was warranted. That said, I have no use for this movie. I was fine with it until afterwards, when I Wikipeed it and found out that the book it was based on is a fictional memoir, and the protagonist completely made up. As though the reality of what happened wasn’t horrible enough and I have to be tricked into caring. And if you’re going to make someone up, maybe don’t make him the single most unsympathetic character ever. Seriously.

Music and Lyrics Music and poetry written into the premise of movies always fascinates me, because it has to walk the line between being good enough that being a hit in the movie is plausible, but not so good that the writers discover they’ve wasted the crowning moment of their careers on a movie starring Jennifer Lopez.

Yes, Music and Lyrics starring the illustrious Hugh Grant (the reason I watched it) and Drew Barrymore (probably the least horrible role I’ve seen her in, but still bad).

I mostly meant the romantic comedy genre as a whole, which has an overload of Jennifer Lopez.
