What I Learned on My Summer Vacation

So we went to the coast last weekend. And the weekend before that, but I did not learn any particularly valuable lesson then.

On the most recent trip, however, I drove the car from the Inn at Otter Crest to Newport Fred Meyer and back. When I pulled into the parking lot, I put the car in park, turned the lights off, and put on the emergency brake, as I have done ever since I’ve ever had a car, even when I drove a manual with a nonfunctioning emergency brake so I had to leave it in gear always.

Before I could get out of the driver’s seat, a still, small voice said, “But, Wife, that is not the way your darling husband prefers the car to be left. Since he will be the next driver, you should really release the brake and leave the lights on, since they will automatically turn themselves off anyway. Just think of how happy Husband will be.”

You will never guess what happened, Internets. When we returned to the car the next day it would not start. Can you imagine? It turns out that if you switch the lights back on after the car has been turned off, they stay on for a really long time. Like until your battery dies.

So we all learned a valuable lesson: stop trying to please your spouse.

The End

    Valuable lesson learned, indeed.
