England FAQs

Where are you going?

Birmingham, England.

Which is…?

The second-largest city in England, 1.5 hours northwest of London.

How does it compare to Portland?

Its metropolitan area has the same number of people as Portland, but in half the space.

What’s in England?

Aside from hedgehogs, it also has a job that someone offered to Stephan: a project manager, managing projects for a parts washing and chemical company in England and seven other European countries (Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, France, Spain, Hungary, and Portugal).

What will Katie do?

Katie will continue working for her current employer, supporting her current office, just telecommuting 8 hours ahead.

How long will you be gone?

3 to 5 years.

When do you leave?

Sometime in January February March 2008.

Where will you live?

We’re hoping to find a furnished flat close to Stephan’s work.

What will you do with your stuff?

Some we’ll take with us, we’ll sell our car, most of our furniture will be fostered by friends, and the rest of it will be stored on pallets in Stephan’s dad’s shop.

What about your cats?

They’ll be coming too, provided the aforementioned furnished flat allows them to.

What about quarantine?

They actually don’t have to be quarantined–they had to get a microchip, rabies shot, and blood test, and now they get to hang out in the U.S. with Adriaan until it’s been 6 months since their blood test and they can enter the UK.

Why so many requirements?

Apparently, there is no rabies in the UK and they’re very interested in keeping it that way, it being an island and all.

How often will you come back to the States?

At least once a year for the holidays. Stephan will also return next May to Portland and next July to Michigan to finish up his last three MBA classes.

Can I come visit you?

Yes, please.

Does that mean that Stephan will have to learn Czech, Polish, Slovak, French, Spanish, & Portuguese?
If I come to visit, will you pick me up at the airport or will I have to ride a double-decker bus all the way to your place?
Isn’t it true that your first born could potentially be born in England? And that Fake Uncle Tony & Fake Auntie Cenaida will then take the child(ren) to EuroDisney?
