Some of the most important things I know, I’ve learned through song.
Things like:
a) all 50 states in alphabetical order (“fifty nifty United States from 13 original colonies)
b) the 10 Commandments, King James Version, verbatim (required for a high school religion class [not the song, just the verbatim part])
c) who told the elements where to go (Mendeleev; admittedly, I could probably have figured this one without a song)
d) the electron configuration sequence (1s2, 2s2, and then comes 2p6…)
Now I’m hoping that the fabulous Jonathan Coulton’s fabulous “The Presidents” will firmly cement the American Presidents for me, finally. I swear I’ve learned them all at least twice.
“Washington was first and he was perfect…
John Quincy Adams looked just like his dad…
General Grant enjoyed a drink or two…
Taft was big and fat and had a mustache…”
(How’s that for a legacy?)
In other music news, you know how Lord of the Rings was never the same after you realized that the lovely melody of that one shire theme sounds just like “This Is My Father’s World”? (YOU’RE WELCOME.)
Not entirely unlike that new Green Day song about “21 Guns”: how is it possible that no one involved in its production noticed that that one guitar bit sounds just like that one bit of the theme from Full House?
The actual members of Green Day are of course inculpable here, as they are obviously too cool to have ever watched Full House. But, seriously, all other production members: what are we paying you for?
Seriously.
